Meisterkurse

Joaquín Clerch (* 1965, Kuba) erhielt bereits als junger Künstler mit dem „La orden por la cultura nacional“ eine der höchsten künstlerischen Auszeichnungen der kubanischen Regierung. Nach Abschluss seiner Studien bei Eliot Fisk (Gitarre) und Nikolaus Harnoncourt (Alte Musik) am Mozarteum Salzburg (1991) erhielt er vom Österreichischen Bundesministerium für Wissenschaft/Forschung den Preis für besondere künstlerische Leistungen. Er hat bedeutende Wettbewerbe gewonnen (Andres Segovia in Granada, Heitor Villa-Lobos in Rio de Janeiro, ARD-Wettbewerb München) und ist weltweit als gefragter Solist und Kammermusiker auf großen Konzerttouren. Für seine Aufnahmen erhielt er u. a. den Echo-Preis und den Cuba Disco. Seine Gitarrenkompositionen wurden bei Chanterelle/Schott Music und beim Label Naxos veröffentlicht. Seit 1999 ist Joaquin Professor für Gitarre an der Robert-Schumann-Musikhochschule in Düsseldorf.

Olaf Van Gonnissen (*1954) war im „Frankfurter Gitarrenduo“ (mit M. Teuchert) in den 70/80er Jahren mit über 100.000 verkauften Schallplatten eines der weltweit erfolgreichsten Gitarrenduos. Neben Vihuela, Barockgitarre und den Instrumenten der Zeit Sors/Giulianis ist er auch in der Spielpraxis der Renaissancelaute bewandert. Er spielte im „Mutare Ensemble Frankfurt“, mit Rosemarie Fendel (Sprache), F. Richter (Klavier) und G. Weyhofen (Mandoline) und war Gründungsmitglied des „World Guitar Ensemble“. Heute spielt er oft im Duo zusammen mit Johannes Monno. Olaf lehrte an der Akademie für Tonkunst Darmstadt und an der Musikhochschule Hamburg und war Mitherausgeber der neuen K. Scheit Edition (UE). Olaf mag Kriminalromane, Comics und franz. Filme. Er liebt deutsche Weiss- und italienische Rotweine und genießt diese gerne bei einem genussvollen Abendessen.

Mateusz Kowalski (*1995 in Polen) tritt regelmäßig bei großen Musikfestivals und Konzertreihen in ganz Europa, USA und China auf. Er studierte in Warschau (bei Dariusz Schmidt und Ryszard Bałauszko) sowie bei Tilman Hoppstock in Darmstadt. Als Preisträger renommierter Wettbewerbe (Paris, London, Indianapolis) trat er in Konzertsälen wie dem Musikverein in Wien, dem Shanghai Grand Theatre sowie in Städten wie New York, Los Angeles, Budapest und London auf. 2025 war er Gewinner des 2nd European Bach Guitar Awards. 2021 erschien seine zweite CD mit sensationellen Aufnahmen von Werken polnischen Komponisten (u.a. Bobrowicz, Sokołowski, Horecki). Aufsehenderregend war die Live-Uraufführung von Chopins Klavierkonzert f-moll (arrang. für Gitarre und Orchester) im Rahmen des Festivals „Chopin and His Europe“ 2023. Seit 2019 ist Mateusz Gitarrendozent an der Chopin-Universität in Warschau.

Antoine Boyer (*1996 in Frankreich) kam sehr früh mit Gypsy-Jazzmusik in Kontakt und hatte das Glück, bei Meistern wie Mandino Reinhardt und Francis Moerman Unterricht zu erhalten. Nach der Veröffentlichung seiner dritten CD „Sita“, die den „Revelation“-Preis des Magazins „Jazzman“ erhielt, wurde Antoine Boyer (mit 16 Jahren!) von der Fachzeitschrift „Guitarist Acoustic“ zur „Offenbarung 2012“ gekürt. Mittlerweile ist er Gast bei allen großen Gypsy-Jazzfestivals und stand zusammen mit großen Musikern wie Philip Catherine, Angelo Debarre, Stochelo Rosenberg, Tim Kliphuis gemeinsam auf der Bühne. Bei Gérard Abiton in Paris erhielt er zudem eine fundierte Ausbildung der klassischen Gitarre. Jahrelang tourte er erfolgreich im Duo mit dem Flamencogitarristen Samuelito, mit dem er im Jahre 2017 den begehrten „European Guitar Award“ in Dresden gewann. Jetzt tritt er vermehrt zusammen mit seiner Frau Yereo Kim im Duo Gitarre/Mundharmonika auf.

Masterclasses - the artists

As a young artist, Joaquín Clerch (b. 1965, Cuba) received the "La Orden por la Cultura Nacional"—one of the highest artistic honors bestowed by the Cuban government. Upon completing his studies with Eliot Fisk (guitar) and Nikolaus Harnoncourt (early music) at the Mozarteum Salzburg in 1991, he was awarded the Prize for Outstanding Artistic Achievement by the Austrian Federal Ministry for Science and Research. He has won major competitions (including the Andrés Segovia in Granada, the Heitor Villa-Lobos in Rio de Janeiro, and the ARD Competition in Munich) and tours worldwide as a sought-after soloist and chamber musician. His recordings have garnered numerous accolades, including the ECHO Prize and the Cuba Disco award. His guitar compositions have been published by Chanterelle/Schott Music and released on the Naxos label. Since 1999, Joaquín Clerch has served as Professor of Guitar at the Robert Schumann University of Music in Düsseldorf.

Olaf Van Gonnissen (*1954) was in the ‘Frankfurt Guitar Duo’ (with M. Teuchert) in the 70/80s with over 100,000 records sold, one of the world's most successful guitar duos. In addition to the vihuela, baroque guitar and the instruments of the Sors/Giuliani period, he is also well versed in playing the renaissance lute. He played in the ‘Mutare Ensemble Frankfurt’, with Rosemarie Fendel (voice), F. Richter (piano) and G. Weyhofen (mandolin) and was a founding member of the ‘World Guitar Ensemble’. Today he often plays as a duo with Johannes Monno. Olaf taught at the Akademie für Tonkunst Darmstadt and at the Musikhochschule Hamburg and was co-editor of the new K. Scheit Edition (UE). Olaf likes crime novels, comics and French films. French films. He loves German white and Italian red wines and enjoys savouring them over a delicious dinner.

Mateusz Kowalski (b. 1995 in Poland) performs regularly at major music festivals and concert series throughout Europe, the USA, and China. He studied in Warsaw (with Dariusz Schmidt and Ryszard Bałauszko) as well as with Tilman Hoppstock in Darmstadt. As a prizewinner of renowned competitions (Paris, London, Indianapolis), he has performed in concert halls such as the Musikverein in Vienna and the Shanghai Grand Theatre, as well as in cities including New York, Los Angeles, Budapest, and London. In 2025, he was the winner of the 2nd European Bach Guitar Awards. In 2021, his second CD was released, featuring sensational recordings of works by Polish composers (including Bobrowicz, Sokołowski, and Horecki). A particular highlight was the live world premiere of Chopin’s Piano Concerto in F minor (arranged for guitar and orchestra) at the 2023 "Chopin and His Europe" festival. Since 2019, Mateusz has served as a guitar lecturer at the Chopin University in Warsaw.

Antoine Boyer (* 1996 in France) was exposed to Gypsy jazz music at a very early age and was fortunate enough to receive instruction from masters such as Mandino Reinhardt and Francis Moerman. Following the release of his third CD, *Sita*—which won the "Revelation" award from *Jazzman* magazine—Antoine Boyer was named the "Revelation of 2012" by the specialist journal *Guitarist Acoustic* (at the age of 16!). He is now a regular guest at all the major Gypsy jazz festivals and has shared the stage with renowned musicians such as Philip Catherine, Angelo Debarre, Stochelo Rosenberg, and Tim Kliphuis. He also received a rigorous education in classical guitar under the tutelage of Gérard Abiton in Paris. For years, he toured successfully as a duo with flamenco guitarist Samuelito—with whom he won the coveted "European Guitar Award" in Dresden in 2017. He now performs increasingly as a guitar-and-harmonica duo alongside his wife, Yereo Kim.

Tilman Hoppstock (born 1961) has been at home on stages around the world for over 40 years. As early as 1983/84, concerts took him to London, Paris, New York, San Francisco, Montreal, Tokyo, Mexico City, Singapore and many other cities with over a million inhabitants. He received invitations to the Royal Academy (London), the Manhattan School of Music, the University of South California (Los Angeles) and held a visiting professorship at the University of Piteå (Sweden) from 2003 to 2005. His approximately 40 CDs have received several international awards. In 2013, T.H. was awarded the Darmstadt Music Prize for his life's work. With three book publications on Bach's lute works (one as a doctoral thesis), he has also gained an international reputation as a musicologist. Tilman Hoppstock teaches an international master class at the Academy of Music in Darmstadt.

Tilman Hoppstock (*1961) ist seit über 40 Jahren auf allen Bühnen der Welt zuhause. Schon 1983/84 führten ihn Konzerte nach London, Paris, New York, San Francisco, Montreal, Tokyo, Mexiko City, Singapore und in viele andere Millionenstädte. Er erhielt Einladungen an die “Royal Academy" (London), die "Manhattan School of Music", “University of South California” (Los Angeles) und bekleidete 2003 bis 2005 eine Gastprofessur an der Uni in Piteå (Schweden). Seine rund 40 CDs erhielten mehrere internationale Auszeichnungen. 2013 wurde T.H. für sein Lebenswerk der ”Darmstädter Musikpreis” verliehen. Mit drei Buchveröffentlichungen über die Lautenwerke Bachs (eine als Promotion zum Dr. phil.) hat er sich zudem als Musikwissenschaftler einen internationalen Ruf erworben. Tilman Hoppstock unterichtet eine internationale Meisterklasse an der Akademie für Tonkunst in Darmstadt.
