You and I - das Duo

Im Jahr 2018 lernte Antoine Boyer die koreanische Mundharmonikaspielerin Yeore Kim auf einem Gypsy-Jazz-Festival in Taipeh kennen. Er war aus Frankreich angereist, um Meisterkurse zu geben und Konzerte zu spielen. Sie war auf Anraten einer Freundin hingegangen, obwohl sie kaum etwas über Gypsy-Jazz wusste. Bei einer nächtlichen Jam-Session spielten sie zum ersten Mal zusammen. Es gab jedoch eine unmittelbare Schwierigkeit: Boyer sprach kein Koreanisch und Kim sprach nur wenig Englisch. „Also spielten wir“, erinnert sich Boyer. „Je mehr Musik wir spielten, desto mehr redeten wir.“ Die Musik wurde zu ihrem gemeinsamen Vokabular. Beide beschreiben diese erste Zusammenarbeit als einen Moment der Erkenntnis. Als Antoine Kims Mundharmonika hörte, war er beeindruckt von ihrem „kraftvollen, ehrlichen, lebendigen Klang“. Kim wiederum erinnert sich, dass sie das Gefühl hatte, Boyer besitze etwas, das ihr selbst fehlte – und gleichzeitig, dass sie etwas Wesentliches miteinander teilten. Dieses Gefühl vertiefte sich, je länger sie zusammen spielten. Heute sind sie ein glücklich verheiratetes Paar, teilen sowohl ihr Leben als auch die Bühne und haben in den acht gemeinsamen Jahren den Rhythmus des anderen kennengelernt. Künstlerisch beschreiben sie einander in poetischen Worten. Kim vergleicht Boyers Spiel mit einem impressionistischen Gemälde von Monet – vielschichtig und nuancenreich. Boyer bewundert Kims Fähigkeit, eine einzelne Note tief nachklingen zu lassen und so eine emotionale Wirkung zu erzeugen, die noch lange nachhallt. Nach der erfolgreichen Debut-CD „Tangram“ (2012 bei Viavox) erschien in diesem Jahr ihr neues Album „You and I“ (Label Just Looking).

Antoine Boyer (*1996)

gilt als einer der wenigen Gitarristen, die zwei radikal unterschiedliche Traditionen meistern - Gypsy-Jazz und klassische Gitarre. Sehr früh kam er mit Gypsy-Jazzmusik in Kontakt und hatte das Glück, bei Meistern wie Mandino Reinhardt und Francis Moerman Unterricht zu erhalten. Schon mit 13 Jahren nahm er mit ihnen eine DVD auf, die 2009 in USA großartige Kritiken erhielt. Nach der Veröffentlichung seiner dritten CD, „Sita“, die den „Revelation“-Preis des Magazins „Jazzman“ erhielt, wurde Antoine Boyer (mit 16 Jahren!) von der Fachzeitschrift „Guitarist Acoustic“ zur „Offenbarung 2012“ gekürt. Er ist der erste Gypsy-Jazz-Gitarrist, der diese begehrte Auszeichnung erhielt. Mittlerweile ist er Gast bei allen großen Gypsy-Jazzfestivals und stand zusammen mit großen Musikern wie Philip Catherine, Angelo Debarre, Stochelo Rosenberg, Tim Kliphuis gemeinsam auf der Bühne. Bei Gérard Abiton in Paris erhielt er zudem eine fundierte Ausbildung der klassischen Gitarre. 2015 und 2016 gewann er als klassischer Gitarrist den “Guitar Contest” in Montigny und den “Révélation Guitare Classique”. Jahrelang tourte er erfolgreich im Duo mit dem Flamencogitarristen Samuelito, mit dem er im Jahre 2017 den begehrten „European Guitar Award“ in Dresden gewann. Gerade mal 30 Jahre alt, ist Antoine Boyer ein international begehrter Künstler, der mit seinem Talent sein Publikum zu Beifallsstürmen hinreißt. Wenn es die Zeit erlaubt, beschäftigt sich Antoine gerne mit handwerklichen Dingen aller Art und ist als Naturliebhaber ein begeisterter Wanderer.

Yeore Kim

stammt aus Südkorea, wo sie im Alter von sechs Jahren zum ersten Mal eine Tremolo-Mundharmonika in die Hand nahm. Aufgewachsen in einem Musikerhaushalt (ihre Mutter ist Klavierlehrerin), lernte sie neben Klavier auch Trompete, Schlagzeug und Cello, bevor sie sich ab ihrem 18. Lebensjahr auf die chromatische Mundharmonika konzentrierte. Yeore hat einen Master-Abschluss der Seoul Music University und wurde bei renommierten Wettbewerben wie dem “Asia Pacific Harmonica Festival”, dem “Seoul Harmonica Festival” und dem “World Harmonica Festival” ausgezeichnet. Sie beschreibt das Instrument als einzigartig nah an der menschlichen Stimme – intim, ausdrucksstark und fähig zu subtilen Nuancen. In Korea ist sie ein Star, aber auch in vielen anderen Ländern hat sich ihr Ruf als außergewöhnliche Künstlerin auf der Mundharmonika verbreitet. Ihr Talent stellt sie einer Vielzahl von Musikgruppen zur Verfügung und ist seit Jahren in Europa, Korea, Indien, Japan und USA auf Tournee, wobei sie Genres von Jazz und Reggae bis hin zu Theaterkooperationen, Tango, Pop und Rock abdeckt. Yeore hat mittlerweile verschiedene CD-Aufnahmen veröffentlicht, sowohl im Duo mit verschiedenen Pianisten als auch zusammen mit ihrem Mann Antoine Boyer.

You and I – the duo

In 2018, Antoine Boyer met the Korean harmonica player Yeore Kim at a gypsy jazz festival in Taipei. He had travelled from France to give masterclasses and perform concerts. She had gone on the advice of a friend, even though she knew next to nothing about gypsy jazz. They played together for the first time during a late-night jam session. However, there was an immediate difficulty: Boyer spoke no Korean and Kim spoke very little English. “So we played,” recalls Boyer. “The more music we played, the more we talked.” The music became their shared vocabulary. Both describe this first collaboration as a moment of realisation. When Antoine heard Kim’s harmonica, he was impressed by its “powerful, honest, lively sound”. Kim, in turn, recalls feeling that Boyer possessed something she herself lacked – and at the same time, that they shared something essential. This feeling deepened the longer they played together. Today they are a happily married couple, sharing both their lives and the stage, and over the eight years they have spent together they have come to know each other’s rhythm. Artistically, they describe one another in poetic terms. Kim compares Boyer’s playing to an Impressionist painting by Monet – multi-layered and rich in nuance. Boyer admires Kim’s ability to let a single note linger deeply, thereby creating an emotional impact that resonates long afterwards. Following the successful debut CD “Tangram” (released in 2012 on Viavox), her new album “You and I” (on the Just Looking label) was released this year.

Antoine Boyer

(born 1996) is regarded as one of the few guitarists to have mastered two radically different traditions – gypsy jazz and classical guitar. He was introduced to gypsy jazz at a very early age and was fortunate enough to study under masters such as Mandino Reinhardt and Francis Moerman. At the age of just 13, he recorded a DVD with them, which received rave reviews in the USA in 2009. Following the release of his third CD, “Sita”, which won the “Revelation” award from “Jazzman” magazine, Antoine Boyer (aged just 16!) was named “Revelation of 2012” by the trade magazine “Guitarist Acoustic”. He is the first Gypsy jazz guitarist to receive this coveted award. He is now a regular guest at all the major Gypsy jazz festivals and has shared the stage with great musicians such as Philip Catherine, Angelo Debarre, Stochelo Rosenberg and Tim Kliphuis. He also received a thorough training in classical guitar from Gérard Abiton in Paris. In 2015 and 2016, as a classical guitarist, he won the “Guitar Contest” in Montigny and the “Révélation Guitare Classique”. For years, he toured successfully as part of a duo with the flamenco guitarist Samuelito, with whom he won the coveted “European Guitar Award” in Dresden in 2017. At just 30 years old, Antoine Boyer is an internationally sought-after artist who captivates his audience with his talent, drawing thunderous applause. When time allows, Antoine enjoys all sorts of craft projects and, as a nature lover, is a keen hiker.

Yeore Kim

comes from South Korea, where she first picked up a tremolo harmonica at the age of six. Growing up in a musical household (her mother is a piano teacher), she learnt the trumpet, drums and cello as well as the piano before focusing on the chromatic harmonica from the age of 18. Yeore holds a Master’s degree from Seoul Music University and has won awards at prestigious competitions such as the “Asia Pacific Harmonica Festival”, the “Seoul Harmonica Festival” and the “World Harmonica Festival”. She describes the instrument as uniquely close to the human voice – intimate, expressive and capable of subtle nuances. She is a star in Korea, but her reputation as an exceptional harmonica artist has also spread to many other countries. She lends her talent to a wide variety of musical groups and has been touring Europe, Korea, India, Japan and the USA for years, covering genres ranging from jazz and reggae to theatre collaborations, tango, pop and rock. Yeore has now released several CDs, both as a duo with various pianists and alongside her husband, Antoine Boyer.
