Yamandu Costa (*1980 in Passo Fundo, Brasilien) gilt als der Superstar der 7-saitigen Gitarre. Das Gitarrespielen erlernte er als 7-Jähriger bei seinem Vater Algacir Costa und verfeinerte später seine Technik bei Lúcio Yanel. Nach seinem Auftritt als 17-järiger beim „Circuito Cultural Banco do Brasil“ in São Paulo galt er als einer der Shootingstars Brasiliens. Auch seine Mitwirkung im Musikdokumentarfilm des finnischen Filmemachers Mika Kaurismäki mit dem Titel „Brasileirinho“ machte ihn international bekannt. Er hat seinen ganz eigenen Kompositionsstil entwickelt, der irgendwo zwischen der typischen Musik aus dem Süden Brasiliens - Choro und Samba - mit fingerakrobatischen Passagen, hohem Tempo und dennoch sehr zarten und melodiösen Stücken angesiedelt ist: magische Klänge voller Poesie und espressiver Kraft! Yamandu ist ein Künstler, der sich nicht in einen einzigen Musikstil einordnen lässt, doch er schafft seinen eigenen, wenn er sie alle auf seiner 7-saitigen Gitarre vereint.

Seine rund 20 CDs und DVDs zeigen seine ganze Bandbreite als Solist, im Duo, Trio, Quartett und mit dem Symphonieorchester des Bundesstaates Mato Grosso. Neben zahlreichen Konzerten in ganz Brasilien ist Yamandu eigentlich immer weltweit auf Tournee. Sein Gitarrenspiel hat viele junge Musiker inspiriert, die seiner neuen Schule des Gitarrenspiels folgen. Er trat unter anderem auch mit Bob McFerrin, Melody Gardot, Richard Galliano, Stefano Bollani, Stochelo Rosenberg und Pepe Romero auf. Yamandus zweite Heimat ist Lissabon in Portugal, wo er seit vielen Jahren lebt. Er ist ein leidenschaftlicher Koch, mag alle Sorten an grünen Säften, interessiert sich für Literatur und treibt – sooft es die Zeit erlaubt - zu Hause oder im Fitnessstudio Sport.

Yamandu Costa (born in 1980 in Passo Fundo, Brazil) is regarded as the superstar of the 7-string guitar. He learnt to play the guitar at the age of seven from his father, Algacir Costa, and later refined his technique under Lúcio Yanel. Following his performance at the age of 17 at the “Circuito Cultural Banco do Brasil” in São Paulo, he was hailed as one of Brazil’s rising stars. His appearance in the music documentary by Finnish filmmaker Mika Kaurismäki, entitled “Brasileirinho”, also brought him international recognition. He has developed his very own compositional style, situated somewhere between the typical music of southern Brazil – choro and samba – with finger-fluttering passages, fast tempos and yet very delicate and melodious pieces: magical sounds full of poetry and expressive power! Yamandu is an artist who cannot be pigeonholed into a single musical style, yet he creates his own by uniting them all on his 7-string guitar.

His 20 or so CDs and DVDs showcase the full range of his talents as a soloist, in duos, trios and quartets, and with the Mato Grosso State Symphony Orchestra. In addition to numerous concerts throughout Brazil, Yamandu is virtually always on tour worldwide. His guitar playing has inspired many young musicians who follow his new school of guitar playing. He has also performed with Bob McFerrin, Melody Gardot, Richard Galliano, Stefano Bollani, Stochelo Rosenberg and Pepe Romero, amongst others. Yamandu’s second home is Lisbon in Portugal, where he has lived for many years. He is a passionate cook, enjoys all kinds of green juices, has an interest in literature and, whenever time allows, works out at home or at the gym.
